This pervasive problem affects individuals of all backgrounds, but women and children bear the brunt of its impact. Silence only perpetuates the cycle of violence, making it imperative for us to speak out and act against GBV. At Solace, we're committed to being part of the solution, providing legal support to those affected by GBV with a care pack we designed to assist the amazing work conducted by POWA.

The Grim Reality of GBV in South Africa

Gender-based violence is an epidemic in South Africa, with alarming statistics that reflect a deep-seated crisis. According to recent reports, South Africa has one of the highest rates of intimate partner violence in the world, a stark reminder of the societal norms and structures that perpetuate violence against women and vulnerable groups.

So, what can South Africans do to break the silence and combat GBV?

  1. Speak Out: Don't hesitate to speak up if you witness or experience GBV. Whether it's within your family, community, or workplace, breaking the silence starts with having open and honest conversations about the issue.
  2. Support Survivors: If you or someone you know is a survivor of GBV, know that you're not alone. Seek support from trusted friends, family members, or professionals.
  3. Report Incidents: Report GBV incidents to the authorities. Law enforcement agencies are equipped to investigate cases of GBV and provide protection to survivors. By reporting, you not only seek justice for yourself but also help prevent future harm to others.
  4. Educate Yourself and Others: Educate yourself about GBV and its impact on individuals and communities. Share resources and information with others to raise awareness and challenge harmful attitudes and behaviours.
  5. Advocate for Change: Advocate for policies and initiatives that address GBV at the local, national, and international levels. Support organizations and campaigns working to end GBV and promote gender equality.
  6. Promote Healthy Relationships: Foster healthy and respectful relationships based on equality, consent, and mutual respect. Teach children and young people about healthy boundaries and how to recognize and prevent GBV.
