Major shifts continue to rock health care access in South Africa
Recently, it was announced that medical aids might no longer be allowed to offer low-cost benefit options for people who cannot afford to pay for full medical aid cover.
Dr Avron Urison - CEO: HealthCare Plan
3 March 2020 | 1 minute readThese low cost benefit options allowed people who do not earn a lot of money to still access some private health care.
However, a government organisation called the Council for Medical Schemes (CMS) has issued a circular (official notice) stating that these options must be scrapped.
The Council says that the decision is meant to help protect consumers, as well as to make way for the National Health Insurance.
The Council has said it believes that the low cost benefit options were not completely fair to the customers paying for them.
However, other organisations have said that the move is not a good idea as the plans were helping poor to middle-income South Africans get excellent medical care.
Two of the main private health care providers are appealing against the move.
